  1. Overall I am a fan of the novel. It was something I needed to read to expand my horizons. While I do read as much as possible I liked reading this because it was unusual for me. I am impressed with it and thought it was well written .

  2. I actually enjoyed the book greatly, it was nice having a main character that wasn't a sparkly goody two shoes, neutral good alignment. Jack was an interesting character and I think it was very well written. It didn't feel like a memoir, more an embellishment of a dream, almost as if you see an old photograph of a boy with a raging ocean in his eyes and come up with some wild backstory for him. While dull at some parts, I really did enjoy it.

  4. I thought the novel was going to end with Jack simply going back to his father to live with him or him, but Dwight getting what he deserved is something that gives me something nice to remember about this book. However, this story drifted from theme to theme and the identity theme more seemed like a side story at the end because Dwight's arrest completely overshadowed it. Other than that though, the novel did stick to the main idea on how authority can be corrupt sometimes, because we see this in all of Rosemary's ex lovers and even some of the school staff. Dwight arrest at the end is like a sign of hope that these evil people will be taken care of soon enough.

  5. I thought Jack would have gone to live with his father. However, his father goes to Vegas with his girlfriend and leaves Jack with a "care taker" who actually turns out to be a pervert. All in all, this was a great novel. Novels like these are great because they don't sugar coat what life is like. This is very realistic, the problems that Jack face in this novel are very similar to problems other kids face in their everyday lives. Although this novel is somewhat depressing, you always feel a sense of hope for Jack. This past month has been time well spent reading this novel.- Arjuna Cabera

  6. What can i say this past month has been crazy because of how the book turns out to be. Jack is a very good example for other kids that have to go trhought their problems on their daily bases.

  7. Well, this book was amazing, judging on the fact that I really hate reading books (sorry Mr. Matts). Towards the end, I thought that Jack was going to move with his Dad, but learning that he and his girlfriend go out and Jack would have to/has stayed with a caretaker who we learn is a pervert. Wait I am sorry but why do most characters in this book turn out to be weird or abusive? Either way I don’t blame Jack and hope that after the book in his own dimension he can still be the kid we got introduced to in the beginning. Either way it is one of the best books I have read due to the sheer factor of Jack’s character development and his challenges because I can personally relate to some of his issues.

  8. I enjoyed the book, but I found it hard to stay focused on reading a lot of the time due to the many tangents Jack tended to go on. He started talking about important events and situations that happened to him, and then never talked about it again and moved on with his life. I thought the story of the book was really good ad entertaining. It kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next in moments like the mustard scene with Dwight and Jack. I liked how easy it was to relate to Jack as a character because he went through experiences from the same viewpoint as us. I would not consider it to be one of my favorite books, but I did like it enough that I would recommend it to someone taking this class in upcoming years. The book has a good plot and because it is easy to connect to, it is easy to expand your point of view and analyze the novel.

  9. I enjoyed reading This Boy’s Life, but honestly wish that there was a more eventful conclusion. The last portion of the book is based on Jack wishing to enlist, and the major relief of Dwight getting what he deserved for the torment of Jack’s mom and him. I was very happy to hear that Jack was going into the military because this gives the reader hope about his future, instead of doubt. I wish the book ended on either a major event or even a cliff hanger. Preferably a positive form of one of these because I’m sure nobody would enjoy this book if even the end of it was completely tragic. This Boy’s life, despite being a primarily negative book with negative events occurring almost every chapter, I think that the reader could take a lot away from this read. They could take away the fact that somebody always has it worse than you, and that you should be thankful every day.

  10. For the most part, I enjoyed the book as a whole. I was amused by the eventful plot, and it provided me with an urge to keep reading. Each chapter was filled with something new, interesting, sometimes even the unexpected. There were small things that I didn't like, though, but what book is ever perfect? I agree with Daniel, as in the ending wasn't the best way to conclude this drastic novel. It was dull and I expected something a bit more, for the reason that the whole rest of the book was hectic. Overall this was a great read, and I would recommend that it is a continued option for future 10R English students.

  11. I really did enjoy this book. There was so much that happened throughout this book. I really wasn't expecting so much to go down but I'm glad I chose this book and I recommend this book to other students. - Alva Crisostomo

  12. Final: This book, This Boy’s Life was a very good book in the sense that it allowed for a similar story to me as a reader. The book is about a boy, Jack, who is trying to live a good life. He and his mother our constantly running away from his Mom’s flings and it puts a hold on Jack. As we read we get to learn what kind of stress this puts on Jack’s character and his actions. MY least favorite character of the book is Dwight because he seems to think he is under control of Jack and his Mom, and acts like a psycho. He is my least favorite character because he is the perfect person to represent all of the horrible people in the world. I would recommend this book to a friend because of the story and the reasoning behind why it was written. Throughout the unit I felt that it was a perfect unit to work with and learn with. There is really no changes that need to have been made.

  13. Overall I think this book was amazing. The characters were insanely well written and we were given just enough information to come to our own conclusions and form our own opinions. I also enjoyed the fact that the narrator, Jack, was not necessarily reliable. this made the book a lot more interpretive. I felt that every scene had a perfect amount of significance and that though some characters were static and straightforward, both Jack and Rosemaryś character arcs are beautiful. - Ryan Witz
