I feel that jack needs to become stronger to not be afraid to show the real him and to not trust Dwight. He honestly seems like a confused soul so I pity him but he would be happier if he was stronger
This is a continuing theme. Jack hangs around with the wrong people and his friends are not really his friends anyway. Mr. Howard seems a bit suspicious but overall I believe he is at least a lot better that everyone else jack has met at school. Though, the real big trend is that Jack is lazy. He only works when he is forced to, and he hasn't even gotten enough high school credit to go to college which is pathetic.
Throughout the novel, Jack tries to impress others and earn acceptance he has not found at home. Mr. Bolger is tender and treats Jack politely. However, he knows that Jack is troubled and unstable. For example, Jack can't brig himself to apologize to Mr. Welch for stealing from him. Even though his social status is higher than the Welch's, his moral values are much lower. The good new is that Rosemary has left Chinook to go to Seattle. I feel bad for Pearl because she feels abandoned after Rosemary leaves. After finding out from Pearl that Dwight is going to Seattle to try an d persuade Rosemary to come back, Jack gets his revenge on Dwight. While Dwight is away, Jack and Chuck break into Dwight's house and take his guns, binoculars, a hunting knife, and a leather shotgun sheath. Even though this is really messed up, it brings me so much joy because Dwight was so abusive to Jack in previous chapters.- Arjuna Cabera
In complete honesty, I'm so glad that Jack is now taking power away from his abuser, and has a much better way of doing it since his mom got out from under Dwight's roof. Dwight took away Jack's happiness while he lived there, so jack takes what makes Dwight happy. Additionally, I agree with what Chuck's dad says about his responsibility when he got Tina pregnant. It doesn't matter how hard it is for Chuck, he's the catalyst for a fifteen year old girl to become a mother, that's harder. I feel bad for Pearl for losing her mother figure but Rosemary deserves better Stevie Guevara
I mean, other than being shocked I am satisfied with the books ending along with Jack going off to the military thinking its where he has been heading all along but Im sad that Dwight tried to kill Rosemarry and I really wish Jack would've caught Dwight because I thought it would have been an interesting seen by means of Jacks actions after catching Dwight and what they would say to each other at this point. I think Jack also did a good job selling the guns as a poke at Dwight, I am a little confused as to why Jack is concerned when a man tells him there is a gun in the closet and Jack wants the man dead if he comes back maybe he figured the man would get him arrested for having the gun but I am not sure. Like I said I enjoyed the book and am satisfied with the ending and the rest of the book. -Jason Kerwar
Throughout the entire book Jack has been seeking for a good father figure. He struggled to find one in every single person that he has encountered. Dwight is gone because the cops arrested him for strangling Rosemary. Every other person does not care or is not around to care. I think this is why Jack is seeking out the military. They are required to order him around, and I think that's exactly what Jack wants. He wants someone to tell him what he should be doing. and then getting validation that he is doing it correctly.
I 100% agree with Daniel. Jacks whole mindset behind joining the military is to learn discipline, and be taught how to be orderly and respectful. Jack made the right choice, although he didn’t necessarily have much of a choice since he got kicked out of Hill. I am happy that Dwight has finally been caught after strangling Rosemary, but still sad that it took so long for society to realize how psychotic this man is. Instead of jail, I seriously think he should be placed in some sort of mental institution. Hopefully, Jack and Rosemary’s future will improve from their past, and will live happier than they were before.
The ending of this book feels really rushed and sort of incomplete. The way he just skims over his father's mental breakdown, his mother's attempted strangling and his struggle at Hill make me feel like the ending isn't as fulfilling as I would have liked it to be. I feel like we are brought so deep into Jack's thought process and emotions just for im to shut down on huge moments at the end of the book. Other than this though I can now firmly say Dwight has every mannerism of an abuser, and I think because of the extent of this relationship, Rosemary may find a healthier partner later on, though her past boyfriends and husbands would say otherwise. Finally, though apparent this would happen through his past failures to change when provided with the opportunity, I am still disappointed that he did not make it through all of his courses at Hill, and feel like he could have if he'd just focused on the work. Though this event was predictable, I still feel like he betrayed himself by throwing away this opportunity.
A common occurrence among books in 10th grade so far has been shaming the military. Obviously not making fun of the military, but I feel as if the books we’ve read have conveyed a deep truth about the military. In A Separate Peace, Gene enlists in the military. Gene used the military as a gateway to escape his current reality and life. Yes, I agree with Daniel that Jack is enlisting because of the way the military will treat him, almost as they are his father figure, but I thought about it in a different way. I saw Jack escaping his hard times to promise a better life for himself after the military.
Jack is finally in a good place and is able to get away from Dwight. Jack must be so relieved from that. Finally escaping from someone who would only bring you down must have felt so good to Jack. - Alva Crisostomo
I like the ending of the book thought it was a little inconclusive as Ryan said. Nothing unexpected happened, Jack got kicked out of Hill and joined the army and Dwight gets arrested. I was confused as to why, in one of the last chapters, Jack getting new clothes for school was described in such great detail. It made it seem like there was a meaning behind it that I couldn’t quite pick out. I like how the ending is happy in terms of Chuck and Jack’s friendship, though they weren’t close, they still sang and had a connection together. Overall, this book was very fun to read. I liked the development of the characters. A lot of them I felt like I knew and understood because of how the author described them and the things they did so well. The plot was very much based on family drama, which was new for me because usually I don’t read a lot of books about family stories like this. Although, sometimes it was stressful to read because I knew Jack wasn’t making the right decisions. I’d say that the thing I liked the least about this book is that it left way too many cliffhangers. I wanted to know what Dwight’s reaction was to Jack stealing his guns and Scout uniform stuff, if he ever found out. There were a lot of things that I would’ve liked to find out that I feel like may have made me understand the characters more.
Jack meets Mr, howard and his wife for lunch. Mr howard reminisces about his memories and time spent at the hill. Jack confirms his final decision that he wants to go to the hill and goes with Mr. howard to get his suit fitted. Jack goes to california to visit his brother and father their father is gone most of the time and he spends most nights eating alone. That fall jack goes back to school and visits rosemary. Dwight follows them and attempts to strangle rosemary but she escapes. Dwight is later arrested. I feel that jack is worried yet relieved at the sight of dwight being gone after the years of abuse he and his mother received from him. T and throughout jacks live his mother was always controlled and followed by men and he could never end up in the right situation for him and his mother. I feel time and place affect the chapter because jack is old enough to realize the effects these men men had on him and his mother and was even willing to track dwight down with his car and realized he not only needed to protect himself but also rosemary.
A lot of things happened in the last chapter and i really enjoyed the last chapter because Dwight got arrested The reason i like why dwight got arrested is because he didn't care about rules he just did whatever he wanted and he was a really bad influence for jack.Jack also got kicked out of hill and he joined the army which is really good for him cause now it really seems like his life is back on track.-samuele Rrotaj
