Week 4, Post 1

  1. Dwight went from being disappointing as a character to dangerous. I honestly despise him as a character and I feel that he is unnecessary in the picture. I am angry towards rosemary too because she has stayed with him for so long. What was she thinking ??

  3. First he forges a report card, then he forges a check... Jack is real serious about getting away from Dwight of course, and it seems as though that all of the deceptive things he has done are simply practice for when he has to run off. I still think that he should stay, because he only has 2-3 more years of life in his house, and if he wants to see his brother, I don't see why he can't wait that long, he has already waited 6 years.

  4. In these two chapters we once again see Dwight's abusiveness when he slaps Jack just for throwing away a mustard jar. We also find out that Rosemary is depressed and when she says she wants to leave Chinook, Dwight pulls a knife and threatens to kill her if she leaves. One thing that surprised me is that Jack did well on his SAT exam even though he's been cheating on everything in school. Furthermore, Jack and Arthur drift apart and start being nasty to each other. This ends with a brutal fight at the "smoker".- Arjuna Cabera

  5. I honestly cannot deal with how evil and abusive Dwight is. I feel so bad for his mother, who's life was threatened because she wanted to escape. And Jack, is desperate. I hate how slimy he's becoming but he's so desperate to get out of that hellhole.

  6. Dwight has become a monster he has shown how evil as a person he is

  7. Finally Jack is able to get out of his situation with Dwight but it comes a cost after the fact that he cuts off part of his finger, gets addicted to morphine, then getting pushed and fulling on his bad finger by Dwight. I like that Jack is reverting back to a better person by moving in with Mr.Bolger and promising not to curse, drink, and smoke. Rosemarry is also looking for work and I hope everything works out and they can get a house and Rosemarry can support herself and Jack.

  8. I don't know how Jack managed to hold himself together so well for the interview especially considering he knew a person in the restaurant that would indefinitely mess it up. Unlike the time he attempted to commit check fraud, he was careful and calm and kept his cool. This shows that he does actually learn from his mistakes and he doesn't move on that quickly from everything like it seems he does. I'm glad Jack and his mom finally built up the courage to leave Dwight in Chinook. I'm not surprised some of Jack's inner "Dwight" comes out when he is mad at his kids because he learned from the only thing close to a father figure he had, which was Dwight.

  9. It's about time that Rosemary has "had enough". It only took her like the whole book for her act upon the danger Dwight brings to her and her son's life. But, I think she made the wrong decision by sending Jack off to live with Chuck Bolger's family. At the end of the chapter, we see that Chuck gives Jack some liquored hawaiian punch. This could potentially be foreshadowing that there is some more trouble to come involving Jack, like we have seen previously when he fell off the cliff when he drank too much.

  10. In these chapters, he has achieved some redemption by his obvious determination and desperation to improve the quality of his education, and therefore, life. He does not have a clear character ark or set of characteristics we could say are character development, so it is hard to say if he will improve permanently in this household change or at Hill if he does get in. I have a feeling that he will be able to get by at this other house, but he will be kicked out of Hill if he does get in, which I currently think is doubtful because of the fact that the interviewer does not seem to think it will be a good fit for him. I am also surprised by his last stray, having that it is nowhere near the worst of Dwight ́s offenses, which there are too many of. I am happy they are finally out of that house, and I am even more joyous that Rosemary will finally be moving to Seattle and getting what she deserves. - Ryan Witz

  11. I really want Rosemary to call it quits with Dwight, but the reasoning why she is not comfortable with doing so is reasonable. Dwight is dangerous, and this is why. Dwight is a force to be reckoned with and I am afraid for Jack because of the situation his mother is in, just because if Rosemary sets him off, Dwight might go after Jack which is very very bad.

  12. I think that Jack wanted to find any way out of his current life. He doesn’t want to be near Dwight anymore. I’m surprised that he took the interview seriously even though he lied. His character is becoming more bland. Now that he is addicted to drugs and alcohol I feel like it is making him act up and talk back to Dwight. I would expect his finger being cut off to be a bigger scene, but it was surprisingly short.

  13. I strongly agree with Nicole on this. If Rosemary cared more about Jack’s future don’t you think that she would’ve gotten to know the Bolger’s a little bit better? This event is total irony. It is ironic because before the Bolger’s the reader was praying for improvement on Jack’s father figure/influence, and now once we see slight improvement, Chuck gives Jack some acholic Hawaiian drink.

  16. I'm glad Jack is finally finding an escape from this awful life. Jack and Rosemary's life have more potential now than it did before. - Alva Crisostomo

  17. Jack is rejected by a bunch of schools after his brother suggested he applied. Jack begins to lose hope and feels he will be at chinook forever. Jack does get a response from one school and meets with Mr. Howard. Jack is warned that the struggles of prep school are very hard and that the academics there are no joke. I feel jack is excited about the new opportunity but does not realizes its downfalls. Why did this one school respond to jack's application and none others? I think that time and place have an impact on jacks decision because he wants to escape the current life and state of being he is in now at the moment. And also kids from school were appearing at the scene and he did not want them to ruin his chance at getting in.
