The most heart breaking part yet would be Dwight selling jacks winchester. I thought that was absolutely terrible of him. I also don’t like his abusive behavior towards jack. It makes me uncomfortable and I feel really bad for jack because he’s still really young. Dwight has slowly been metamorphisizing into a monster.
Dwight is way too overconfident, putting the blame on other people/things for his failures. However, his thoughts are justified. He made his best attempts to discipline Jack but failed, and there were no flaws in his efforts, resulting in him beating on Jack. Like how Jack is a bad person, Dwight thinks he has bad shooting equipment, and although he can't succeed at anything, he does give it his best shot and most likely blames something other than himself to keep his self esteem.
A major point of irony was the exam question the girl was removed from class for saying her favorite amendment was for freedom of speech. For saying this, she was silenced and failed the entire test because her idea differed from the teachers. Stevie Guevara
In my opinion, this is the worst we see from Jack so far in the novel. The only reason why he brings home good grades is because he is a cheater. He also starts hanging out with all the bad kids at Concrete High. For the first time we find out that Jack drinks alcohol. The alcohol symbolizes the stress reliever for everything that's happening in Jack's life. Furthermore, I find it interesting how Dwight is amused by Jack's story of how he passed out twice and how he almost died by falling off a tree branch. This part of the novel strongly connects to tree accident in "A Separate Peace".- Arjuna Cabera
Do you think that while Dwight was growing up he experienced a similar situation? Also do you think Jack's actions are in any way influenced by Dwight, or better yet, if Dwight wasn't around would Jack be doing these things? (By things I mean drinking, and cheating)
I think this is a realistic and valid point since Dwight might have been "bullied" in the sense by his father or other figures in his life and can't do the same do anyone else but Jack and seizes the opportunity whenever he can. -Jason Kerwar
Yes, in my opinion, I feel like Dwight influences Jack to do those things. Jack has no figure to guide him, so he doesn't really have a sense in all the bad things he's doing, and because of this, he will continue as we saw in chapter 21. He forged a bank check in order to reach his brother in Princeton.
In this chapter, Jack tries to run away and takes checks from the bank but gets caught. He tries to pay for things with a check from the bank and uses his fake identity. But the cashier woman gets really upset over this, which I was a little confused about. She took it personally and ran after Jack with “sorrow”.
I have both started to lose sympathy for Jack, and also gained more as this book continues. He continues to do things that are understandable, but also unrespectable. His efforts to leave his abusive home are quite understandable, but the way he goes about this by praying on an old woman and then pretending he wasn't himself when he sees her next, are repulsive. When he felt as though the way she was screaming his name when they ran was touching his heart, makes me sympathetic, but the reason not being that he sympathizes with her pain or financial loss, are, once again, repulsive. He also did not steal stuff of importance for running away, which makes me question why he stole those things in the first place. I would not assume a person need magazines to run away, which makes me question why he stole them. What was his motive? And does anybody else think he is mentally ill? - Ryan Witz
This chapter reminded me of the movie Catch Me if You Can. In the movie the main character is around the same age and also uses similar tactics in order to commit check fraud. In the movie however, the character was much better organized and knew what he was doing. When Jack attempted to exchange the check he sounded hesitant and gave off the feeling that he was lying. The woman felt concerned for him as if he was one of her own sons trying to steal.
I'm starting to hate Dwight, in fact, I just don’t like anyone with the name Dwight, like Dwight Schrute. But anyways, he is starting to use other people as his scapegoats. Also, on top of him being annoying to read about, he is turning abusive which is never good. Someone go get Dwight some help…
This is what I meant by something big was gonna happen and he was going to try and get away with it. Unfortunately Jack isn't successful and gets caught taking checks. - Alva Crisostomo
After not seeing or hearing from his brother in 6 years Jack is surprised to have received a letter From his brother geoffrey. And is very delighted. With the letter came a Princeton sweatshirt and hopes to become a student there in the near future. Jack decides he wants to hitchhike there to see his brother but the one problem is that he has no money. Jack steals a check attempts to go to the library and is caught for using a fake identity. As they were going to call the police jacks runs. Why did Jacks brother right him a letter? I feel that Jack is desperate to spend time with a real blood related siblings and gets caught up in the thought of spending time with him causing him to make this decision.

ReplyDeleteDwight has gone way to far over selling jacks winchester, that really explains a lot from him.
